The Slowdown Announces a New Podcast Offering a Whole-Earth Perspective

March 30, 2020, NEW YORK — The Slowdown, the conscious entertainment media company, announces the launch of a new podcast, At a Distance, that looks at the big picture and offers an outlet away from fear- and anxiety-inducing media during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Building off three successful seasons of the company’s other podcast, Time Sensitive, At a Distance features leading minds in science, philosophy, psychology, economics, the arts, and beyond, and offers a whole-earth, long-view perspective as we move through—and look past—this pandemic. On each episode, co-founders Spencer Bailey and Andrew Zuckerman will explore what this moment reveals with guests including environmentalist and writer Bill McKibben, post-traumatic stress expert Bessel van der Kolk, food urbanist Carolyn Steel, economist Chris Canavan, philosopher Simon Critchley, and futurist Thomas Ermacora.

In the lead up to—and in this time of—a worldwide slowdown, The Slowdown’s content has proven profoundly prescient and timely. Since its founding less than a year ago, The Slowdown has garnered 300,000 downloads of its Time Sensitive podcast and nearly 10,000 subscribers to its flagship newsletter exploring the five senses. “I’ve always felt The Slowdown was naming a movement that’s beginning,” Zuckerman says. “It’s a movement that’s not ours, but we’re watching it grow.”

Adds Bailey: “Through our platform, we’re creating a hub for these voices and ideas—this ‘slowdown’ culture—to be contextualized, moderated, connected, and heard.”

At a Distance, which will be recorded via Zoom calls from Bailey’s Brooklyn apartment and Zuckerman’s Upstate New York home, will serve as the company’s primary podcast during this time, offering a window into how the world might change as a result of the pandemic.

Season 3 of Time Sensitive, which so far includes intimate in-studio interviews with fashion designer Gabriela Hearst, tech visionary and chef Nathan Myhrvold, artist Dustin Yellin, and designer-activist Julia Watson, will go on hiatus during Covid-19. Time Sensitive guests from previous seasons include actor David Duchovny, trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort, inventor and entrepreneur Tony Fadell, architect Bjarke Ingels, artist Rashid Johnson, A.I. pioneer Kai-Fu Lee, designer and MIT Media Lab professor Neri Oxman, and actor Peter Sarsgaard.
